Hurricane Irene appears as though it may be heading up the east coast. Now is the time to start preparing to protect all of your property including your home, autos, and boats. If you want to follow the trajectory of the storm, click here and you will be directed to weather.com.

You may also want to check a great resource that is available from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) by clicking here.

As a precaution you may want to write down, or put in your smart phone, information on your insurance policies including homeowners, flood and autos. Key information needed in the event of a claim is the insurance company, their claims phone number and your policy number. In the event of a storm our office may be closed temporarily – reporting any claims to the insurance company directly will facilitate your claim processing. As soon as we are able we will be available to assist you with any claims and related questions.

Some Practical Grill Use Tips

While there is nothing like cooking outdoors, it comes with additional risks. Make sure you are taking the proper safety precautions.

Among the most obvious are grill cleanliness, checking out gas containers for leaks, and keeping grills ten feet or more from the house. Having a fire extinguisher nearby when grilling is another safety tip that makes practical sense. Enjoy outdoor cooking and be safe.

Wash the Tops of Aluminum Cans – Be Safe & Healthy

This incident happened recently in North Texas.  A woman went boating taking with her some cans of soda.  On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit where she died two days later.  The autopsy revealed she had died from Leptospirosis, which was traced to rat urine that had infected the tops of the soda cans. Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances.  It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the tops of all soda cans before drinking out of them.  The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.   A study at NYCU showed that the tops of all soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets — full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.
